I picked up a bottle of Nars Sheer Glow foundation a couple of weeks ago on shopping spree to my local Nars counter. I'd heard raves about this foundation for months now and since I'm always on the lookout for the next best foundation, I gave in.

Nars Sheer Glow has 4 colour categories: Light, Medium, Medium-Dark and Dark. Every colour category has various sub-categories. I was matched to Light 5 (Fiji) which is the perfect match for me. I like that all the shades are names of places. Very nice idea!

nars

This is how Nars describes this product: A glowing, satin-finish foundation with sheer and buildable coverage. Replete with skincare benefits and the NARS Complexion Brightening Formula, skin is hydrated, more luminous, softer and smoother. Used daily, Sheer Glow Foundation improves skin brightness, radiance and texture. For normal to dry skin types.

My take on it: Since starting to wear this foundation a couple of weeks ago, I cannot go back to the rest of my foundations! Nars Sheer Glow applies to my face like a lotion, that's how soft it is. I use my a87 to blend it in and I only need the smallest amount. This is a light to medium coverage foundation yet it covers all my old acne scars and red spots. It also feels so light on the skin that you won't even know you have anything on. I set it with my beloved Ben Nye Translucent Powder and it lasts on me until I take it off (over 8 hours). Honestly, I don't even want to take this foundation off; that's how much I like the feel of it on my skin. I don't think this is a glowy finish product though (don't know why it's called Sheer Glow), it's semi-matte on my combination skin.

I even like the bottle design, I think it looks very chick and I like that it's a heavier bottle. I know a lot of ppl complain about lack of pump but that doesn't bother me either, I just shake it before I use and I get all the product I need.

The only con I can think of is the price. I believe I paid about $60CAD after taxes for this baby. However, I like it so much that I know for sure I will repurchase. I just need to finish the rest of my foundations and then I'll just stick to Nars Sheer Glow. Seems like I finally found my HG foundation (move over MUFE HD!).

Have you guys tried Nars Sheer Glow? Any Thoughts? What is your HG foundation?

For today's look, I wanted to try out my brand spankin new Chanel Coco in Teheran so I thought I do warmer eyes with oranges and raspeberry tones. First of all, can I say I love Teheran? It's such a beautiful pinky coral and very unique in my gigantic lipstick stash. I hear that Teheran is one of the few LE lipsticks in the Rouge Coco collection. I snagged the last one and I'm so glad I did! Also, I really like this orange combo on my eyes. It looks like it really brings out the green flecks I have in my eyes. I got so many compliments on my look today at work (even from the men, lol!) so I'm even more happy with how it tuned out.

Let me know what you think. Also stay tuned for the Nars Sheer Glow foundation review coming this weekend. Hint, it's my new HG foundation, surpasses even my beloved MUFE HD!

Hey everyone! Hope you have all started a great Friday. I'm visiting my parents today and probably staying over as my hubby is out of town until tomorrow afternoon. I slept really well last night for a change so I feel great!

I wanted to tell you about Makeup by Crystal's 200 Followers giveaway. Crystal is one of my favourite bloggers as every single look she creates is beyond flawless. She has some amazing prizes to give away so check her out here.

Have a great day everyone. I will be catching up with look of today (featuring Chanel Rouge Coco N.56) and my Nars Sheer Glow foundation review this weekend!

I recently discovered Trincess blog Emerald Sparkle and am loving it! I especially liked the Ruffian inspired nail design she did so I decided to give it shout. I must first say that I've been polishing my nails since I was 6 and I still had never tried any kind of nail design (don't laugh). So this is pretty much my first try.

I had on 2 coats of ChG 2030 already. I used a French tip guide near the bottom of my nail bed, then I painted the rest of my nails with a coat of Misa I will Survive which is an opaque creamy black. Then I layered everything with one coat of Essie's Matte About You top coat.

Here's the result. And yes that's my car's steering wheel, I drive a conventional Civic and I'm proud!

February 25, 2010

Hey guys, hope you are having an awesome Thursday. I've been stuck with chronic headaches unfortunately since Monday. I think I need to see a doctor about it soon. What made me fell better though was I realized this morning that I have now reached 240 followers! Thank you all so much for you interest in Beautyspot. You all inspire me to do better and improve this blog :)

For today's poll, I want to ask you about your favourite texture when using foundations. I thought of this question today as it's my third day of wearing Nars Sheer Glow and realized this foundation has renewed my faith in liquid foundation (review is upcoming this weekend). I have use all sorts of foundation in the past; from liquid, to gel (water based), to powder and cream. I don't have perfect skin and foundation has always been a must for me. I say that liquid is still my fave as it covers better and I have a freer hand to blend the foundation as much as I like. I do like powder for a quick look when I want to be done in less than 5 minutes. My only experience with gel type foundation has been MUFE F&B which is a fave of mine. I love this cooling texture for the summer. I've only had negative experience with cream foundation though, I find that it feels heavier and I look shiny on the oilier part of my skin (I have combination skin).

What type of foundation do you prefer? What is your favourite foundation?

On my trip to the mall, I stopped by the Chanel counter to ask if they'll have the new Rouge Coco lipstick out tomorrow. To my surprise, they already had them in! It seems like the Bay in Canada got these babies before any of the stores in the US. I really wanted to try this new lipstick coz I keep hearing raves about them.

I only ever had one Chanel makeup item and that was a quad given to me when I was 18. I remember not really liking it though and I don't even know where that quad is anymore. But I've been intrigued by Chanel lipsticks lately and thought what better time than today! I was at the counter trying out 10 of the 30 lipsticks they offered for an hour. I became super chummy with the sales lady who let me brows as long as I wanted. I ended up with No.31 Cambon and No.56 Teheran.

chanel1
My pretties in their boxes!

chanel2
almost opened!

chanel3
yummy! Teheran on the left and Cambon on the right

Teheran is a glossy pinky coral and the first Rouge Coco I wanted to try. The reason being the name. Teheran is the way French folks pronounce Tehran, the capital of Iran. This is the city I was born in and spent my chilhood so you can see why I like the name. The lipstick itself is gorgeous on my skintone. I think I have mentioned here that I have some difficulties with warm pinks and corals but this one is ultra-flattering. I would say anyone especially ladies with fair to light medium skintone can rock this shade.

Cambon is a super rich raspberry red. If you've been following Beautyspot for a while you know that I'm a lover of red lipsticks and can never pass up a good red. This particular shade has a very pink tone to it so it's not blood red or vampy red. This is actually the type of red I was missing in my stash. I think this particular shade will suite every skintone.

Swatches on my arm. These are taken in the bathroom so imagine the colours "pinker" as you see here.
swatches

Overall, both lipsticks I purchased and all the ones I tried at the counter are very pigmented. They apply very smoothly and even Cambon doesn't seem to bleed out. Another positive is that these feel so light on, like you're not wearing any lipsticks. The only down side is the price as with all Chanel products. They cost $38CAD. However, I'm loving these two shades so much that I'm planing on going back for a few more.

Hope you enjoyed this mini review and swatches. Will do lip swatches as soon as we get some sunshine here in the Capital.

What do you guys think of Rouge Coco? Have you purchased any or are you planing on getting some? What colours are you interested in?

I had the day off from work today so I've been cleaning the house and catching up with the blogging. I also wanted to go to the mall and this is the look I wore out. I've been meaning to wear my True Babe l/g for a while and today was the perfect opportunity. True Babe is an awesome bright pink lipglass but I would say it's a little bright for work. I love this type of colours though.

Here's the FOTD. Hope everyone's week is going great so far.

I thought about this discussion topic when I was browsing the Makeup Talk Forum and came upon this thread. The thread is basically about a user who is annoyed at MAC for increasing the price of their products and coming up with all these LE collections. So basically, she wants to back away from MAC and use other brands (MUFE, Nars, Illamasqua...).

I actually posted a reply to the thread but I wanted to share my opinion with you guys as well. I don't think of a brand (MAC or other) as a person to whom you have to be faithful to or you break away from. I like and use MAC most of the time as despite their price increase, they still provide the cheapest high end products for overall decent quality. I'm a big fan or their lipsticks, eyeshadows, lipglosses, pigments (I have too many from before so the size change doesn't phase me), paint pots, brushes and blushes. That's a handful already. Yes they do increase their price, but so do all other companies (not just cosmetics).

With regards to the LE fatigue, MAC has always been on trend, that's what the brand is all about. Complaning about too many LE collections is like complaining about too many fashion trends. You don't have to buy an entire wardrobe for every trend change the same way you don't have to buy every single thing from each LE collection. That's exactly how I look at it; if I like the trendy skirt and it suites me, I buy it. If the trend was not made for my body, I skip it! It's the same with LE collections. I don't care how big neutral stuff was past few months, I didn't buy the whole All Races, All Sexes collection coz I'm not a neutral girl.

Another reason I think some folks get tired of the brand is that all they bought for the longest time was MAC. Obviousely after a while you'll get tired of it. I always experiment with all brands available in Canada. I love Nars for their semi-matte lipsticks, matte velvet pencils, duo eyeshadows and blushes; I adore MUFE matte eyeshadows and foundation; Bobbi Brown makes amazing gel liners and shimmer bricks are divine; Stila has awesome Smudge Liners and high quality eyeshadows; Lise Watier is great for eyeliners, glitter liners and concealer. I also have had good luck with drugstore brands like Annabelle and NYX.

I don't think I'll be feeling MAC fatigued anytime soon, due to my line of thinking. What is you guys' take on this topic?

February 22, 2010

Happy Monday everyone! Funny enough, I feel much better today, there are various sources of stress in my life right now but I'm trying not to let them get to me. I did a blue purple look that I first did more than a year ago, you can see it here. This particular combo of eyeshadows is a fave of mine. I made it different by using a light aqua liner instead of black.

Hope you are all starting a great week. Let me know what you think of the look.

I tried to relax as much as I could today as I unfortunately had to work on Saturday; totally felt like my weekend was stolen from me! I went to the mall for a bit today (and picked up a bottle of Nars Sheer Glow), then we went to my parents for lunch. I thought I post the look I wore out today. I wanted to review the eyeshadow palette and pigment that Annabelle's rep kindly sent me for review since last week but we didn't have a single sunny day. I prefer to take pictures in bright days as I think the colours come out much truer. Since the sunshine didn't happen I decided to go for it today and use the "cloudy" option under my camera. I just couldn't wait anymore, lol!

I have been using Annabelle products (lip liners and eyeliners) for a while but this was my first experience with their eyeshadows and pigments.

The first item I received was pigment in Magentini:

pigment
First impression: there's about 1.2g of products in the pigment jar so you do get a decent amount. The jar opens with a click and there's small hole where you dip your brush to get the amount of pigment desired. On the bright side, it's very unlikely to accidentally topple over your jar and spill the pigment. On the downside, it's a bit difficult to get out the amount of product desired.

The colour itself is a happy medium pink; it's not too pale that it's almost white and not as bright so it would scare off the average customer. In the jar, Magentini (love the name btw) reminded me of Fuchsia pigment by MAC, though after swatching them side by side, Magentini is a lighter and cooler pink:
p/m

The colour payoff of this pigment is very good. I got the same payoff as my MAC pigment. And as with all loose products, Magentini would be much brighter if used with a mixing medium or simply wet.

The next item is my custom made quad with the colours Graffiti, Vivid Violet, Snow Flakes and Buff Naked:

quad

Let me start off by saying that I love Annabelle for coming up with the idea of letting us choose our own palette. I cannot think of another drugstore brand that gives you that ability. The quad itself is very sturdy and has a cute design. The glass front does not really hold finger prints which is a plus. I also love the funky design. Two thumbs up for the palette!

Now onto the colours:

Buff Naked is an awesome neutral, sort of a pinky peach (flesh tone) colour. It's great as wash of colour and as a highlight. It applies smoothly and his pretty much matte. I've been using this one a lot as my highlight.

Snow Flake is a slightly shimmery white colour. My stash was lacking a shimmery white and this is a decently pigmented white. Once again, the application was easy. I need to use this one soon in a winter wonderland look; possibly before the end of winter!

Vivid Violet is a lot like MAC's Stars n Rockets, but without the blue flash. It has tiny gold shimmer in it and is my absolute favourite colour in my quad. Vivid Violet is pretty pigmented and would look gorgeous paired without other purples or golds (because of its gold shimmer).

Graffiti on me swatches as a super dark green with silver coloured glitters. This eyeshadow is super pigmented! Wow, I honestly was ready to do two swipes but I got a great deal of payoff with just a light swipe.

Here are the swatches on my arm. Once again, the colours are much brighter IRL, damn you cloudy skies!

swatch
Left to right: Graffiti, Vivid Violet, Buff Naked and Snow Flakes.

Overall, I really liked my package. I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth the products apply and how pigmented they were. Annabelle is a great brand for the price you pay. I really wish they add more pigments to the line. It would be nice to have a more affordable alternative to pricier pigment brands (MAC, MUFE and Illamasqua).

Hope you enjoyed this review. Do you use Annabelle products? What is your fave product from the brand?

Purple Rage was the lipgloss I bought a week after my big Spring Colour Forecast haul and I'm so happy I went back for it. I really like these sorta deep raspberry red colours. This one is not quite as dark so I think it will also be gorgeous in the spring.

I'm not being vein, by hot eyes I mean I did warm coloured eyes and cool lips are super cool toned lips, aka St Germain l/s. I was pleasantly surprised of the feedback I got on my Rare Warm look so I thought I do another. I wanted to contrast the warmth of the eyes with coolness on the lips. And I wanted to wear St Germain which is one of my fave lipsticks by MAC. I think us NW girls can rock it (we can wear it on its own), but it's also wearable by NC girls as long as you pair it with the right gloss or liner.

Suzi Says Fen Shui is the second polish I got from OPI's Hong Kong collection. It's a beautiful dusty blue. I find it interesting that it's a bright colour yet its' definitely dusty as well. I don't have any blue like this in my stash and I have many many blues. The application was a breeze, I could have gotten away with one coat even but I did two.

If you buy two things only from Hong Kong collection, make it Suzi Says Feng Shui and Jade is the New Black. In other words, copy my haul ;)

Unlike the last couple of days, I'm in the office today and need to catch up with all the emails and write my reports since last Friday. This is a short week as Monday was a holiday and it definitely feels like the days are speeding past me.

For today's poll, I thought to ask you about your favourite nail polish finish. I thought of this post as I was painting my nails last night with OPI Suzi Says Feng Shui (will be posted tonight). I enjoy all finishes of nail polish. When it comes to my nails, as I do with my makeup, I enjoy variety. I tend to wear creams most of the time but I also mix it up with shimmer, glitter, matte and holo finishes. Because cream is the most practical finish for me, most of my nail polish stash has cream finish. I love glitter and holo for the weekends and I enjoy a coat of Essie's Matte About You topcoat when I'm digging a flatter look. I think mattes add an interesting dimension to my nails. When it comes to shimmer and sparkle finish, I prefer them in the summer months.

What is (are) your preferred nail polish finish(s)?

I know I said I was not a v-day kinda person, but I just realized that the look I wore yesterday to our friends' dinner party was pink! I mainly wanted to match Color Club Pink Flame that was on my nail not do a pink look, haha! The dinner party was fantastic, tones of Jamaican food (one of hosts was from there) and red wine to wash it all down. I also got a call at around midnight from my best friend who lives in TN telling me she just got engaged! I was absolutely thrilled. Seems like a wedding in July is in the works!

Today is a holiday here in Ontario and hubby and I are relaxing at home. He's just picking up some breakfast from Starbucks (we always make our breakfast though). How was everyone's weekend? Did anyone wear makeup? hehe :D

If you do celebrate Valentine's Day, then happy lovers day to you. Hubby and I don't care for it as we celebrate dates that are "us". I also take issues with how manufactured the day has become. We had brunch with a couple friends of ours and are invited to dinner elsewhere. I thought since I had a couple of hours in between, I can show you my babies. By my babies I mean these:
bb1

I love Bobbi Brown (BB) shimmer bricks. I bought my first one (Gold) back in 2007 and I've been hooked ever since. I love that they are multi-tasking products. You cab use the stripes separately as eyeshadows or swirl your blush brush on them and use as blush or highlighter. They are pretty pricey (about $50 CAD) but I love them non the less, they're my favourite highliter.

gold
Gold - this one is gorgeous when I have a tan. I actually mainly use this one in the summer as it sorta clashes against my normal (non tanned) skin and since summer is short and I hardly have a tan, this is my least used shimmer brick. I think it just pops more against a darker skin and gives it an amazing golden glow. Gold shimmer brick was a limited edition product.

apricot
Apricot - this one has got to be my most used one. I love it on top of blushes such as Eversun or Cantaloupe. Makes for an amazing peach flush. Apricot shimmer brick is also limited edition and works for all skintones.

Photobucket
Nude - I scored this one not too long ago and is ideal for a nice flush on my cheeks. It makes me look fresh but the colour is not very obvious, it mostly gives you an amazing glow. Nude is a great no makeup cheek product, you look like a better version of yourself without much effort. Another limited edition product!

nectra
Nectar - I pretty much just got this last week; it's part of BB's spring collection. Nectar is very pigmented and can be used as blush or highliter. I like that it's a pinkier coral so I imagine it flattering a wide array of skintones. I love the individual colour stripes in Nectar. They are all very pigmented and I have a feeling I will be using this product quite a lot as blush and eyeshadow.

swatches on NW25/30 arm:

Is there a certain product you guys collect? Does anybody else love shimmer bricks? Which ones do you have?

February 12, 2010

I really liked how today's look came all together. I dig the molten metal affect of the pigments on the lid. Though I think this is prob a better summer night look than a winter day look, lol! I especially really love the affect of Clove p/m over Artifact p/p (it's like a shimmery pinkish taupe, drool), and with my beloved Rose p/m it's just divine.

Hope you guys like this look too. And have a great weekend everyone! I will probably not post tomorrow as I'm gonna be out of town. But I will be back on Monday :)

February 11, 2010

Happy Thursday everyone! Since I live in Ontario, we have a long weekend coming up so I'll be off Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I'm planing on making a trip to a small town around here on Saturday to visit my friend's baby who's now 6 month old (and super cute). The rest of our plans are still pending. What's everyone's weekend plans?

For today's poll, I wanted to ask you about your makeup inspiration. How do you come up with various colour combinations? Do you get inspired by other ppl's FOTD's? Looking at nature perhaps? or maybe you match your makeup to your outfit? Or do you just pick colours randomly?

I thought of this question as this is the #1 question I get askd in my blog comments and on Specktra. I'm actually quite random with my color combos. I tend to pick colours that compliment (not match) my outfit. But the majority of the time, I think of a colour in my stash that I haven't worn for a while and think of what colours would go well with it. If I just bought new makeup, then I think of colours in my stash that make an interesting combo with this new purchase. I think of all the possible combos when I'm in a relaxed state of mind; either I'm cooking or showering, lol! That being said, I have my go-to combo of blues and purples that I can run to if I'm drawing a blank.

Where do you guys get inspiration for your makeup looks?

February 10, 2010

It's quite a nice day today and it almost feels like spring, that is it's warm for Ottawa at around -3 deg. Usually this time of the year we sit at around -30 deg! I was inspired by the warmer weather t do a colourful and spring like look. I also woke up quite rested and happy and totally up to blending colours that are hard to blend together, lol!

This is the look. Hope everyone's week is going great so far.
